Although this second set of ten works was supposed to "grow" from the first, mine really didn't. I mean, it kind of did. The idea grew, it just wasn't extremely apparent in the physical body of the work.
Unlike the first set, this second set had a much deeper meaning. In each junky piece of food, a word was hidden. Most of them aren't very noticeable at first, and this was done for a reason. For example, the word "mania" is hidden in the candy corn. "Indulge" can be found in the frosting of the cupcake. These words aren't necessarily positive, representing the negativity the habit of indulgent eating can have.
Over eating and obesity have become a major problem today, especially in America. Many people, including myself, find themselves compulsively eating. It happens out of boredom, out of sadness, even out of happiness. But the thing is, many times we don't even realize we're doing it. This is why the words are hidden. They sort of serve as a subliminal message.
I really like where this work is going. Not only do I have a subject matter I really enjoy painting, but now I also have the ability to incorporate a deeper, interesting meaning into my work. Future plans include going bigger, tightening up, and using more color.
