Though many people claim "the eyes are the windows to the soul," I disagree. The mouth can provide much more information about a person than their eyes ever could. A smile, frown, smirk, or snarl is an automatic indication of how a person is feeling. It can also show what a person likes. Some people might pierce their lip, or wear colored lipstick, or stick their tongue out. My goal in making these pieces was to explore various ways people can express themselves through their mouth. While some pieces are silly, others are more serious. Some lips are colorful and loud, while others are more natural and quiet. These distinctions all represent different personalities and emotions. Not necessarily mine, but the emotions of anyone and everyone. Because of this, anyone can relate to my work.
Personally, I really like how these turned out, especially the purple and blue ones. The idea was kind of spur of the moment, but I almost like it more than my original idea. The images are clean and simple, yet interesting as a whole. The colors turned out really well and the wood grain (on the pieces that have it) gave the pieces an interesting backgorund and texture that isn't there on the other pieces.
Though this wasn't especially experimental, it was fun to learn how to draw something new (the lips) and have the chance to use all the funky colors. I wish I had tried these with a different medium or added something more. I like how they look now, but I know that this work has more potential than the finished product.
Two things I want to change are the pencil lines and the tongues. It would look much better if I could redo the teeth and separate them with grey paint rather than grey lead. It makes it look messy and unfinished, which is something that has really started to bother me. The tongues look unfinished as well. Once I started to paint them, I realized that I really had no idea how to paint a tongue. So I just painted it pink. However, doing this only flattened the images out and took away from the overall quality. I would like to go back and add some values to them, or at least do another coat of paint.
