Artist Statement
My summer work concentrates more on technique than subject matter. My goal in making these was to experiment with patterns, defined color schemes, and working on a larger scale, which are things I had not had a chance to play with much. I also wanted to try a more illustrative, whimsical style, which resulted in a children’s book-esque image. The playful patterns and colors are attractive to the eye, while the animals themselves are not the most appealing. This sort of contradiction is something I hope to implore implement into my work in the future.
Intelligence
In my opinion, I have solved my own creative challenge. I wanted to do something a little bit different than what I usually do and I feel like that was accomplished. Not by subject matter or meaning, but more by technique. I usually paint realistically with realistic colors, but this time I experimented some more with unnatural colors and unique patterns. I chose this direction because I want to develop a good technique before I start to put in ideas and concepts.
Investment
To be completely honest, I did not invest as much time into these works as I would have liked. I finished on time, but due to other AP summer work, traveling, and other things, my work got put on the back burner for the majority of the summer. Once I realized how short I was on time, I did my best to invest as much time as possible into these. Deadlines need to become a much bigger priority from here on out, as I know my work will drastically improve if I pace myself and keep the due dates in mind.
Difficulty
Time management is always my biggest roadblock. During this project especially, I found myself rushing to put in small details and finishing touches, which prevented me from actually finishing them the way I wanted. However, in some ways this worked in my favor. Many times when I have too much time, I overthink my work and make it something I never wanted it to be. But this time, my pieces reflect the kind of technique I want to start utilizing more often. Many of my peers said that my work mimics illustrations in children’s books, which I liked. That is a direction I may start working towards.
Self Assessment
If I were the instructor, I would give this a B overall (if I was being generous). I know that I have made better works in the past and I know that I can do better than this. In fact, I’m not done with this pieces by any means. From past experiences, I know that I have more craftsmanship and creative ability than what is displayed in these pieces. For the art show, I definitely want to finish and perfect at least one of these so I can show what I can really do, rather than what I pull together in two weeks.
